Deployments

One of the CP AoR priorities is in country support of the national and sub-national child protection coordination groups.

Field Support Team

The Child Protection AoR’s Field Support Team (FST) deploys trained and experienced staff into vital coordination roles at short notice whether for a catastrophic new emergency, the deterioration of an existing crisis or in support of existing in-country teams. The FST includes coordination experts, information management officers, and child protection coordination and thematic specialists who have experience of a wide range of contexts and who can operate in a variety of languages. Having a strong, rapidly deployable team of experienced, skilled staff is key to delivering on the Child Protection AoRs strategic goal of strengthening field-level coordination, global accountability for all AoRs and Clusters.

The deployment of the FST is managed through existing standby agreements administered by UNICEF (EMOPS) in Geneva. A request form and ToR should be provided for every request.

Activities and Country Support

Story from the field

The violence in Burkina Faso has been intensifying over the last years due to a complex rural crisis. In view of the huge needs in Burkina Faso, immediate scale-up of humanitarian aid is vital. The Global Child Protection Area of Responsibility supported these efforts with several missions, including coordination and information management support. Main achievements included the co-drafting of the Humanitarian Country Team protection strategy to ensure child protection and related topics are adequately reflected; updating of the draft CP AoR Strategy to reflect the most recent developments and to assist the child protection community to implement a joint response strategy; and advocacy at national, regional and international level for increased resources to address the urgent needs.

Standby Partners

The Standby Partnership (SBP) is a network of bilateral agreements between organisations and United Nations (UN) agencies. The partnership commenced in 1991 in response to the humanitarian crisis in Iraq where it was necessary for the United Nations (UN) to rapidly increase its human resources at short notice.

Today, it comprises a range of partners which provide support to UN agencies responding to humanitarian emergencies throughout the world via the secondment of gratis personnel. Each Standby Partner maintains its own roster of humanitarian experts who are called upon to fill staffing needs and gaps in UN operations. The collaboration between UN agencies and partners is an integral component to any rapid response mechanism.
